ChicagoAfter a terrible shooting that claimed the lives of his father, uncle, and a family friend while on a birthday vacation to Durango, a 14-year-old Chicago kid is in a Mexican hospital, battling for his life.

The boy’s family, who reside in the Logan Square district of Chicago, was enjoying his birthday when the awful event happened.

The party was traveling down the Francisco Zarco Highway in Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, in an SUV with Illinois license plates when they were targeted by gunmen, according to the boy’s grandmother.

Vicente Pea Jr., 38, Antonio Tony Fernandez, 44, and Jorge Eduardo Vargas Aguirre, 22, are among the victims of the attack. They are all from Chicago.

While his family seeks to get him back to Chicago for specialist medical care, the teenager who was hurt in the attack is still in the hospital in Mexico.

A charity organization called United Giving Hope has stepped in to assist the boy’s family in getting him home. In the meantime, the grieving family members are asking Mexican authorities to explain the attack’s circumstances.

The incident is part of a concerning rise in violent crime in the area, according to Durango officials. Due to gang-related violence, the US State Department has issued travel advisories for the region.

Travel alerts have been issued, although there is still little information available regarding the attack. The family and community are seeking justice and closure because authorities have not yet identified the reason of the violence.
