The scary game Fear the Spotlight, made by Cozy Game Pals and Blum house Games, has a retro look and looks like it would work well on the original PlayStation. It will just come out again on Steam, this time with Linux support. Note: forty seven gave me the key.
When it came out last year, the developers took it off Steam to add some new content and fix some problems that people had found. As a result? A very tense love letter to PS1 survival horror games, with nods to Silent Hill and Resident Evil. It’s the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit in 2024.
Vivian and Amy are a bit of an odd couple because their styles and personalities are so different. They decide to break into their high school one night to find a spirit board so they can hold a séance. As you might expect from a horror game, things don’t go as planned.
It’s pretty cool that you can play through two different stories. The first one gives you an introduction to the game’s mechanics, setting, and mood. After a few hours, when you finish the main story, it will flip (in a way I won’t spoil) to give you a taste of things from a different point of view.
It’s definitely creepy, but it’s not really scary. The atmosphere is what makes the game scary, not jump scares or fighting. In Fear the Spotlight, you have to hide from enemies and listen to scary sounds that will make your heart race.
There are also a lot of puzzles to solve, which will change the way you play from third-person exploration to a more point-and-click style. This nicely breaks up the exploration and gives you a chance to catch your breath.
Additionally, the puzzles aren’t too hard, so all in all, it’s a pretty good entry into the genre, and maybe a slightly younger adult or late-teen audience would enjoy it.
You’re in for a treat if you can handle the old-school looks. I believe that the retro look goes better with these kinds of horror games than with other types. It just looks right, and Fear the Spotlight really does look and feel like a horror game.
It’s also not a very long game—you can probably finish it in 5–6 hours—so it won’t take you forever to finish (which is good).
It works with native Linux. But there is a bug in the Native Linux version where the sound goes to the wrong output. This bug also exists in Steam Deck.
So you have to change it in your system settings by hand. The Linux version kept locking itself to 20FPS, which was another bug I found. When you play the Windows version with Proton 9, neither of the bugs are there.
