The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division revealed a crash video last week that showed a police pursuit that started in Virginia and ended in Charles, where a minor was killed.
Early on December 3, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed robbery at a King George County, Virginia, business.
According to a press release from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect’s car, a Kia sedan that was later reported stolen, was stopped by the King George County Sheriff’s Office. A pursuit then took place across the Gov. Harry W. Nice Memorial/Sen. Thomas Mac Middleton Bridge into Maryland, where Maryland Transportation Authority Police provided assistance.
According to the announcement, the suspects kept running north on Crain Highway toward La Plata, where officers from the La Plata Police Department and Charles County Sheriff’s Office were able to successfully place stop sticks that the car struck.
Among the officers engaged were Cpl. Tommy Johnston, a 20-year veteran, and La Plata Department Officer First Class Jacob Shuar, a two-year veteran.
The patrol division is where both officers are stationed. There was also involvement from Cpl. Katie Bottorf, a nine-year veteran assigned to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office patrol division.
Dashcam film of a King George Sheriff’s Office helping deputy pursuing the young suspects at approximately 3:42 a.m. on December 3 opens the January 3 release.
The pursuit was reported to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 3:46 in the morning.
The chased car struck another car on Crain Highway close to Charles Street at 4:06 a.m., causing both cars to become inoperable.
The footage shows that the suspects hit the back of the other car at over 100 mph as it was turning left from Port Tobacco Road onto the northbound lanes of Crain Highway.
The man climbed out of the front seat as officers drew their firearms and approached the car. They put him in handcuffs.
You can hear the driver asking, “Is my leg okay?” over and over.
Before EMS came, officers started life-saving procedures after realizing a passenger was trapped in the vehicle.
A press release from the sheriff’s office stated that the passenger was transferred to a nearby hospital in serious condition, while the driver was sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Independent Investigations Division, the passenger was later declared dead at a nearby hospital on December 5; the name of the deceased will not be made public because of juvenile privacy rules.
A state attorney general’s office representative told Southern Maryland News that neither the two youngsters’ ages nor their cities of residence will be disclosed.
The press release stated that the person whose car was hit was also transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect’s vehicle struck the tire deflation devices and proceeded to drive at speeds believed to be higher than 100 mph, according to a statement from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
No officers were hurt in the pursuit.
