Barbara Lee, a former U.S. representative, may be preparing to run for mayor of Oakland after filing papers with the city on Monday.

Lee registered as “Barbara Lee for Oakland Mayor 2025” and listed herself as treasurer on the “Statement of Organization: Recipient Committee” form 410 that she submitted to the city’s election office.

Before beginning to generate funds for their campaigns, it is one of the first things that candidates must do. A candidate intention statement was also submitted by Lee.

On Monday, Lee’s representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Lee did neither confirm or deny that she was thinking about running for politics when questioned about it back in November.

“We’ll have time later for other conversations,” Lee replied. “We’ll have time to talk about this later.”

According to a list released on the city’s website last Friday, 13 candidates have so far submitted papers indicating a possible run for Oakland mayor, including Lee. The deadline for nominations is January 17.

Mayor Sheng Thao, who lost a recall election in November, will be replaced by a new mayor chosen in a special election on April 15.
