Golden State Warriors to retire Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey

Andre Iguodala, who was instrumental in the Golden State Warriors’ four-time NBA championship dynasty, will have his jersey number retired, the organization said Tuesday.

The organization announced in a statement on Tuesday that Iguodala’s jersey will be retired after their game on February 23 against the Dallas Mavericks.

He will join Al Attles, Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Meschery, Chris Mullin, and Nate Thurmond as the seventh player in franchise history to have their name displayed in the rafters at Chase Center.

“Andre will go down as one of the smartest, shrewdest, most unique, and most successful players to ever wear a Warriors uniform,” said Joe Lacobs, the CEO and co-executive chairman.

Iguodala, who was voted the Finals MVP in 2015, helped the Warriors win their first NBA Championship in forty years after being acquired by them in a three-team trade in 2013. Iguodala later helped Golden State win consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018.

Iguodala rejoined the Warriors in 2021 after playing for the Miami Heat, and in 2022, he earned his fourth NBA title with the team. He made it to the playoffs every season and the NBA Finals six times in his eight seasons with Golden State.

Iguodala played for the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers during his 19-year career before retiring in 2023.

“He was the ideal player and person for our squad at the ideal moment, and his 2014 sacrifice of coming off the bench made it clear that he was here to assist us achieve one goal: victory. The first member of the dynasty to have his number retired is Iguodala. In the past, Lacob has stated that Kevin Durant, who played for the teams that won the 2017 and 2018 NBA titles as well as the one that advanced to the 2019 NBA Finals, ought to have his number retired.

Jacob declared, “No player will ever wear No. 35 for the Warriors again,” following Durant’s 2019 departure to join the Brooklyn Nets.
