Richmond County has filed misdemeanor charges against a man who was wanted on drug-related offenses in a coastal county.
Devonte Tyrell Bethea, 32, of Hamlet, was arrested without a warrant on Wednesday on suspicion of resisting a public official and in possession of up to half an ounce of marijuana, according to court documents.
Bethea gave an officer fictitious names in relation to the first charge, per a magistrate’s order.
Bethea is also charged with selling or delivering cocaine, possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, and conspiracy to sell or deliver cocaine in Brunswick County, according to records from the Richmond County Jail.
Those warrants are not available because Brunswick County has not yet enrolled in the eCourts system. Additionally, the charges have not yet appeared in the North Carolina Courts System’s online records.
Bethea is being held on a secured bail of $51,000. He is scheduled to appear in Brunswick County on January 2 and Richmond County District Court on February 20.
Bethea was found guilty in 2019 of two charges of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance and one count of possessing or receiving a stolen weapon, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction’s records.
Bethea was convicted of having a Schedule II controlled substance the following year.
In 2022, he was found guilty of two further charges of possessing a Schedule II controlled substance with intent to sell, which resulted in the revocation of his probation for those four convictions. He was imprisoned for ten months and two weeks.
Brunswick County is where all previous convictions took place.
Until they are proven guilty in court, all defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent.
