After a customer found a cellphone capturing video in a restroom air vent, the manager of a Santa Rosa eatery was taken into custody, according to police on Tuesday.
According to Santa Rosa police, officers were called to Ohana Hawaiian BBQ, located at 2150 Santa Rosa Avenue, on Monday to look into a customer’s claim that they had discovered a cellphone in the women’s lavatory ceiling. After watching videos on social media concerning covert recording devices, the female customer developed a habit of inspecting the vents in public restrooms, according to the police.
After entering the single-use restroom, the customer looked at the air vent and noticed what appeared to be a cell phone there, with the camera lens pointing inside the washroom, according to the police.
The customer called the police, alerted the restaurant’s manager, and blocked access to the lavatory until the policemen came. After removing the vent cover, the officers found the phone and noted that it had been capturing footage for around forty-six minutes.
The phone was found to belong to the restaurant manager, Danial Nam, 37, of Santa Rosa, who reportedly used it to record at least one victim in the restroom, according to the police. On one count of surreptitiously filming someone in a private setting without their knowledge, Nam was taken into custody and lodged into the Sonoma County Jail.
The amount of his bail was $200,000.
In order to ascertain how long Nam was allegedly recording individuals and to identify any more victims, investigators confiscated Nam’s phone and laptop computer and were examining the equipment, according to police. Customers in the restroom are thought to have been able to be videotaped for several months.
Call the Santa Rosa Police Department’s tipline at 707-543-3595 if you think you may have been a victim or if you have information regarding the case.
