A grandmother in Ohio, who is 43 years old, will spend several years in prison because she shot her 6-month-old granddaughter in the head on purpose and didn’t feel bad about it.
Records looked at by show that on Tuesday, Butler County Court of Common Pleas Judge Daniel E. Haughey sentenced Mia Harris to nine to twelve years in a state prison for shooting young Myra in 2023. Thankfully, Myra survived the horrific attack.
Harris made a deal with prosecutors last month and pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault. Her sentence will be longer by three years because she used a gun during the crime.
The prosecutors agreed to drop two other counts of felonious assault and one count of firing a gun at or into a dwelling without permission in exchange for her guilty plea.
Harris was accused of attacking other family members the night of the shooting, which is why the felony assault charges were dropped.
Before Haughey gave the sentence, Myra’s mother spoke in court and read a victim impact statement that directly mentioned Harris, according to WKRC, a CBS and CW affiliate in Cincinnati.
Dreamy Buffington, Myra’s mother, is said to have told the man, “I just want you to know that you changed Myra’s life forever and what you did was wrong to my daughter.” “You had a gun to my head, and I loved you.” You hurt my family and me.
Harris turned down the chance to speak to the court at Tuesday’s hearing.
According to a news release from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, the events started on December 9, 2023, at about 1:50 a.m., when deputies were called to a home in the 6800 block of Dutch View Court in Liberty Township, which is about 25 miles north of Cincinnati, for a report of an infant being shot.
The mother said, “My baby’s been shot,” on the 911 call. “Someone shot my baby.”
Caller 911 asked, “Someone shot your baby?”
She said, “Yes… Lord, please save my baby.”
As first responders found the victim, who looked like he had been shot in the head. The child was taken to UC West Chester Hospital in very bad shape. Later, the police confirmed that Myra had been shot in the eye.
The baby victim wasn’t the only family member Harris is said to have tried to hurt.
The sheriff’s office said in the release, “During the incident, Harris shot at several family members before setting out to kill the child.” “The child is still in very bad shape at this point.”
A police report in Butler County Area 2 Court says Harris “knowingly” hurt another person seriously by “striking [that person] in the face with a fist.” The victim’s name has been changed.
Then Harris broke down a bedroom door that was locked after firing a gun through it several times, the document says. Harris broke down the door and shot her granddaughter in the face.
The grandmother ran away before the deputies got there, but she was caught soon after.
Harris told the police, “That wasn’t my grandchild,” when they asked her why she did it. “Sorry, not sorry,” Detective Daniel Turner said in court, according to WCPO, a local ABC affiliate.
Police asked Harris if she thought she should be punished, and she said, “No,” according to WXIX, a Fox affiliate in Newport, Kentucky.
A police officer asked her, “Why?”
Harris replied, “Because fair is fair.” “You tried to trick me, but I beat you at your own game.” It’s a tie.
When he talked about the case with WXIX before, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones didn’t hold back.
“It wasn’t a mistake.” That was the plan. I have never seen such a disgusting and vile crime as shooting a 6-month-old baby. “This is the baby’s grandmother, which makes it even worse,” Jones told the station. “She went and shot this child and doesn’t seem to feel bad about it at all.”
I feel bad for the baby, the family, and everyone else who has to deal with this. The doctors, the people in the lifeguards, the deputies, and everyone else. “This is the worst thing that can happen.”
Even worse, the sheriff said it was “one of the worst things I’ve seen.”
Last week, Buffington made changes to a GoFundMe page for Myra’s ongoing medical bills. She said that donations are “crucial” to helping the now-18-month-old girl get better.
