The timing for the system is Thursday, June 5, when the temperature will climb into the upper 80s to even 90 degrees in some spots.

Severe thunderstorms with downpours and 50 to 60 mph wind gusts are expected Thursday, June 5, from northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania through most of New York, all of Connecticut and Massachusetts, and into northern New England, AccuWeather meteorologists say. (See the image above.)

Before the storm’s arrival, a warming trend will kick in Tuesday, June 3, and continue throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service.

That will keep the possibility of more showers and storms possible beyond Thursday’s system — on both Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, with the most likely timing in the evening on both days.

Massachusetts residents are being urged to prepare as a powerful storm system is set to sweep through the region, bringing intense downpours and potentially damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.

What to Expect

According to the National Weather Service, the incoming storm will move across the Bay State beginning late Wednesday evening, with the heaviest impacts expected through Thursday morning. Forecasters are warning of:

  • Rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches, with localized areas possibly exceeding that
  • Wind gusts ranging from 50 to 60 mph, especially along the coast and in exposed areas
  • The potential for localized flooding, particularly in urban areas and low-lying spots

Wind Risks: Power Outages & Travel Hazards

Wind gusts of this magnitude can pose serious hazards:

  • Falling limbs or trees could cause power outages
  • Loose outdoor items may be blown around or damaged
  • High-profile vehicles could experience difficult driving conditions, especially on elevated roadways and bridges

Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and decorations before winds pick up.

  • Stay updated through local weather alerts and emergency services

Flooding and Alerts

A Wind Advisory and Flood Watch may be issued for parts of the state as the system approaches. Commuters should check road conditions and MBTA service updates before heading out Thursday morning.

With strong winds and soaking rains on the way, now is the time to take precautions. Stay informed, stay safe, and plan ahead as Massachusetts prepares to ride out the storm.
