A New York-based influencer recently caught the internet’s attention by exposing a surprising rule at her gym. Caitlin Emiko, an Australian influencer now living in New York City, shared this revelation in a “day-in-my-life” video, describing the gym’s strict and unique dress code.

The gym, which is part of a private fitness chain, introduced the rule to promote an inclusive and judgment-free workout environment. Caitlin explained on her TikTok account that the dress code requires members to wear only black activewear. This policy aims to eliminate distractions and comparisons among gym-goers.

Caitlin shared that the rule has had a surprising impact on her gym experience. She no longer feels the need to worry about her appearance compared to others, nor does she know anyone’s personal style outside the gym. For her, the uniformity has created a more relaxed and focused environment.

Her video quickly gained traction, sparking curiosity and debate among viewers.

One user commented, “So interesting about the black activewear – is there a reason why?” Another said, “A dress code at the gym, that’s crazy.” However, not all reactions were negative, with one person adding, “Wait, that’s such a good idea.”

Some viewers even shared their own positive experiences with similar habits, with one commenting, “I just do this anyway. It helps me not think about what I have to wear. Black is always flattering, even if I don’t feel great. It still gets me to the gym.”

Michelle, the head of content and marketing at the Athletics Club, clarified the gym’s reasoning behind the dress code in a TikTok video shared last year. She explained that wearing black activewear fosters a sense of unity during group runs, helps reduce the temptation to compare outfits, and ensures that gym photos look visually cohesive.

“It also just looks really cool,” Michelle added.

This isn’t the first time a fitness center has sparked discussion with unconventional rules. Earlier this year, Australian gym owner Tony Doherty, of Melbourne-based Doherty’s Gym, implemented a controversial policy banning members from recording themselves while working out.

Doherty noticed his gym had become overrun with tripods, turning the space into what he described as a “circus.” In February, he banned all tripods across his four gym locations. Reflecting on the decision in September, Doherty shared his thoughts during an interview on the Dos and D Podcast.

“Honestly, [tripods] were doing my head in,” Doherty admitted. “One day, I walked into the gym, and there were seven people using tripods in one room. I just thought, ‘This has to stop.’”

The policy received mixed reactions but has since inspired other gyms worldwide to adopt similar measures. Doherty expressed relief at the change, stating that his gyms are now more focused environments for members to exercise without distraction.

Both Caitlin’s experience with her gym’s dress code and Doherty’s tripod ban highlight a growing trend in the fitness industry. Gyms are increasingly prioritizing creating welcoming, distraction-free spaces for members to focus on their health and well-being.
