Authorities in San Jose arrested a man in connection with an intentional hit-and-run pedestrian accident that left the victim pinned under a minivan early Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the San Jose Police Department, patrol officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday to a hit-and-run collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near North Capitol Avenue and Berryessa Road.

Arriving officers discovered an unconscious adult male victim pinned beneath a minivan. According to police, the victim was not breathing and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The unknown driver fled the scene before the police arrived. The preliminary police investigation determined that the collision was intentional, and the suspect driver was identified as Edward Herrera, a 40-year-old San Jose resident.

Detectives from the San Jose Police Department Homicide Unit took over the investigation and discovered that the suspect and victim knew each other.

Officers apprehended Herrera later that day in San Jose. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity after confirming it and notifying the next of kin.

The motive and circumstances of the incident are being investigated. This marks San Jose’s 27th homicide of 2024.
