The total being worked on at the Jasper County Courthouse today is $86 million.

The leaders of Jasper County are working on the budget for 2025. This spending plan could include big changes, such as how much workers are paid.

“This year, we were able to do a salary study that helped us raise our employees’ pay to what the market says they should be paid.” “So every little bit helps,” said Jasper County Auditor Sarah Hoover.

The budget calls for almost $1.4 million to bring county workers’ pay up to par with other counties.

“On top of our market study, we were able to add 5% COLA.” “We were able to fill every single gap and have extra to put away for later,” Hoover said.

Adding a full-time job for the county coroner is another possible change that would cost less.

The coroner’s pay would go up from about $30,000 a year to almost $72,000 a year. It could also give him two more deputy coroners to work with.

These costs are being paid for in part by new tax revenue streams.

“The marijuana for recreational use is pulling in close to a million dollars a year.”

The use tax that we just passed this year is another thing. I suggested that we get to about 3 million.

“The use tax and the marijuana tax have helped a lot.”

That’s all there is to it. “That’s how we’re going to help with the wages and things,” Jasper County Commissioner John Bartosh said.

At this point, none of the changes are real. The commissioners hope to have the new budget ready by the middle of December so that it can start on January 1.
