Jury convicts gang member who was 14 when he fired 15 to 20 shots from an AR-15, killing the mother of young child following a fender bender

A 14-year-old Colorado gang member was convicted this week of shooting and killing the mother of a little child with a high-powered assault rifle following a minor fender incident at a Denver crossroads.

In a press release, Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said that Remi Cordova, who is now 18 years old, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Pamela Cabriales, who was 32 years old.

Because the crime was so bad, Cordova was moved from Juvenile Court to District Court and charged and tried as an adult, prosecutors said.

“It makes no sense and is evil.” According to KCNC, the victim’s brother Alex Cabriales said outside of court, “There’s no remorse that we’ve seen.”

McCann called it a murder with no reason and no mercy.

In the press release, McCann said, “I am very grateful to the jury for coming to this just verdict. I hope that it brings comfort and a sense of justice to everyone who knew and loved Pamela Cabriales.”

At a red light on Colfax Avenue and Interstate 25 on February 20, 2021, a lot of people were killed.

Court documents show that Cordova, who was in a car driven by another teen named Neshan Johnson, thought Cabriales had tapped their car from behind at a red light.

Court records show that Cordova asked the driver, “Can I bust on them?” the newspaper reported.

Court records show that Johnson replied, “Do what you gotta do, that’s on you.”

Johnson told the cops According to court documents, Cordova then got out of the car with a “AR15 and fired 15-20 shots into the car behind them.” This was reported by the local NBC affiliate KUSA.

Cabriales was taken to the hospital but died a few days later. The driver of the car right behind Cabriales’ wasn’t hurt in the shooting.

Alex Cabriales told local Fox affiliate KDVR in great detail about the injuries his sister had, saying, “the whole top of her head was blown off.” Her brain was out in the open.

He said, “The people in this town need to know what these people did.” “My sister looked lovely.”

Previously reported that the next day, a Denver police officer saw the attackers’ car and recognized it from a shooting at a McDonald’s that was going on at the time. The officer chased the car until it crashed. After a search, the teens were finally arrested.

Cordova had been in a gang and had a record for breaking the law as a child.

Investigators say he told them about his “toy,” an AR-15, and how he was moving up in the gang, according to what prosecutor Jacob Friedberg said during closing arguments on Tuesday.

He told the jurors, “This person did this because they want to move up in the gang world.” “It’s too bad that’s how the world works.”

Johnson was given a 35-year prison sentence in June 2023.

On Dec. 12, Cordova will be given his sentence, which could be life in prison with the chance of parole after 40 years.

“A beautiful soul was the victim of a heinous crime,” said a GoFundMe page set up to help raise money for the victim’s son to go to college.

The page said, “Pamela Cabriales is a wonderful person who will always do her best to help those in need.” She’ll do anything to look after her son. She’s a great friend, sister, mother, daughter, and aunt.
