In a firm move against drug crimes in the Hudson Valley, a 44-year-old man from Middletown, Wayne Battles, was sentenced to seven years in prison for distributing crack cocaine.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced the sentencing, highlighting Battles’ guilty plea to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

This case shines a light on the rising issue of drug trafficking in the region, which has been facing growing addiction problems and increased crime rates related to narcotics.

The Drug Bust

Battles’ illegal dealings were uncovered during an undercover operation in July 2020, where he attempted to sell crack cocaine to an undercover officer. In October of the same year, Battles was stopped by New York State Police while driving.

Police found about 27 grams of cocaine in his possession, and during court proceedings, he admitted his intent to sell the drugs. This case highlights the growing concern of drug sales in Hudson Valley, especially as drug dealers increasingly target at-risk communities.

A Message to Drug Dealers

District Attorney Hoovler stressed that this sentence is a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking in Orange County. “We are serious about combating drug crimes, and if you engage in these activities, you will be caught and punished accordingly,” he said.

Hoovler’s strong words reflect the region’s ongoing battle with the opioid crisis and the rising number of substance abuse cases. Law enforcement is determined to take a strong stand to protect the community from these threats.
