Following a water rescue off the coast of San Mateo County over the weekend, authorities reported that a man and an 8-year-old boy had perished.
Shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, several lifeguards and rangers arrived at the Cowell Ranch State Beach south of Half Moon Bay, according to California State Parks officials. The California Highway Patrol, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office, Pillar Point Harbor Patrol, Coastside Fire, and the U.S. Coast Guard were among the other first responders dispatched to the area.
The two were located in the water by State Parks lifeguards. Aid was given when the two were taken to a Harbor Patrol ship.
The 39-year-old man was transported by ground ambulance, and the 8-year-old was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center. The boy and the man were later declared dead.
A State Parks representative told CBS News Bay Area, “We offer our sincere condolences to the family for this tragic loss.”
