A guy was taken into custody by San Rafael police after he allegedly broke into a home, assaulted the residents, and then tried to abduct an elderly resident of a skilled care facility.
On suspicion of many offenses, 48-year-old San Rafael resident David Jonathan Margoliash was taken into custody and placed into Marin County Jail.
A Ross Street resident called police at 1:12 a.m. on Saturday, claiming that Margoliash had broken through the back door of his home and assaulted him and his expectant wife. The caller claimed that after being forced out of the house, Margoliash left on foot in an unidentified destination.
Officers discovered that while the residents were asleep, a suspect who fit Margoliash’s description allegedly entered the residence through the rear door.
The expectant wife reportedly discovered Margoliash in their living room after he woke her up with a noise he made while moving around the house. Her husband was awakened by her cry. Margoliash then allegedly used a flashlight to hit her in the head, causing minor injuries.
Margoliash’s flashlight was taken away from him by the wife during the dispute. Then, in an attempt to induce Margoliash to leave the house, the husband confronted him and started fighting with him.
Margoliash allegedly bit the husband’s hand during the scuffle. At last, the husband forced Margoliash down a set of patio stairs and out of the house. Margoliash ran away.
A nearby hospital provided medical care for the bodily wounds sustained by both victims.
Police scoured the area for several hours with assistance from the Novato police K-9 unit and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
At 5:18 a.m., a skilled nursing facility in the 1600 block of Fifth Avenue called the police to report a suspect posing as a transport service employee who wanted to transfer an elderly patient to Santa Rosa.
Officers on the scene discovered that Margoliash had reportedly entered and exited the building multiple times. The man was unable to take the patient because the staff at the care facility questioned Margoliash’s claims and requested his credentials. Then Margoliash walked out of the building.
Margoliash was followed by two nurses who called an officer, who took him into custody without any problems.
Margoliash was charged with felony attempted kidnapping, criminal assault with a deadly weapon, and felony burglary and was placed into the Marin County Jail.
According to the police, Margoliash has a lengthy history with their department and has been arrested multiple times for violent offenses. After entering a guilty plea to criminal charges connected to an attack at the Islamic Center of Marin in Novato in March, he is presently awaiting sentencing in Marin County Superior Court.
Margoliash was detained without being granted bail.
