Authorities said an Indiana man is incarcerated for shooting his estranged wife in the back when she was five months pregnant, killing the unborn child and gravely wounding her.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called to a shooting in the 700 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday.
When police arrived, they discovered Kayla Netherland, 25, shot and wounded in the restroom. She was taken to the hospital by paramedics. The infant could not be saved, but the doctors were able to stabilize her.
A probable cause arrest affidavit that Law&Crime was able to get states that one of Netherland’s friends entered the residence to do laundry around the time of the incident.
She claimed to have seen Jeremy McBride, 36, the estranged husband of the Netherlands, standing over her body. According to police, McBride gave his pal a quick glance before quietly leaving through the front door.
The companion informed the authorities that she thought McBride was the cause of Netherland’s demise. Officers found McBride and stopped him using license plate readers.
According to officials, McBride exited the vehicle, which rolled away since it wasn’t in park and struck a post. He allegedly told the officer that the gun in question was in his car and that he was going to surrender himself in to the police station.
“Is she okay?” he allegedly asked. Police allegedly found the revolver in the car along with handwritten notes to his estranged wife about their connection.
According to investigators, McBride wrote to [Netherlands] about his frustrations with her infidelity, their failed relationship, his anger and insecurities that caused him to mistreat others, his belief that he had not changed into a person [she] would want to have children with, and his desire to have children with her.
The affidavit claims that following Miranda, the defendant informed officers that he was angry because she had gotten pregnant with another man despite the fact that they were still together. He thought they could get back together, but the marriage had been struggling and they had split up in September.
She might return eventually, but not for me. According to reports, McBride wrote, “But in many ways, I killed her.”
A few days before the shooting, he allegedly bought a rifle and ammo with the goal of murdering her, the infant, and himself.
According to McBride, he and Netherland had gone shopping at Goodwill on Sunday before hanging out at her house.
The affidavit states that he was sitting on the bed and they were conversing in the restroom. According to reports, he fired five shots into her back because he thought it made sense to shoot her at the time. He said she never saw him shoot.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears told local Fox affiliate WXIN that it is indeed alleged that this individual went to considerable measures to accomplish his planned actions.
Police claim that Netherland had at least two surgeries: one to repair her inside injuries and another to remove the fetus. She’s still in the hospital. At the moment, McBride is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. He faces charges of feticide and attempted murder.
