According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, a man who suffered severe injuries after a violent assault in a Santa Clara County jail has passed away.
Following an incident at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas last month, the 22-year-old man was placed on life support in the hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Robert Jonsen released a statement saying, “We send our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.” “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges we face and the importance of our efforts to improve safety and support within our facilities.”
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the Milpitas jail.
The county reported that two suspects in the Jan. 27 attack have been identified and are currently in custody. They may have committed torture and murder.
The man was found unconscious and seriously injured by a deputy performing a routine welfare check shortly after noon that day, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The deputy alerted other staff members and requested medical aid. Up until emergency medical workers arrived at around 12:13 p.m., life-saving procedures were carried out.
After being transported to a nearby hospital, the man had surgery to treat his severe brain injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that the violence took place in a spacious, open, dormitory-style living area where multiple rows of metal bunk beds allowed for little segregation between prisoners.
According to Jonsen, a “comprehensive” criminal and administrative inquiry is in progress, and the jail is taking action to ensure that a similar incident doesn’t occur again.
“We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities to ensure those responsible for this violent attack are held accountable,” Jonsen stated. “We remain committed to transparency and will keep the public informed as we learn more about this incident.”
