Following a shortage of drug ingredients from China, Mexican gangs are allegedly exploiting animals and homeless people as test subjects in an attempt to regulate the fentanyl drug trade.
The Daily Star claims that the Sinaloa cartel tests on animals like chickens and rabbits as well as poor people in Culiaca.
Gang members are using promises of as little as $30 to lure susceptible individuals into testing risky experimental fentanyl formulations, which can cause fatalities or severe reactions.
To create a powerful product, the gangs combine concoctions with experimental ingredients such animal tranquilizers like xylazine in makeshift labs.
According to the New York Times, animals are injected to determine the strength of drugs based on arbitrary conclusions. If a hen or rabbit lives for more than 90 seconds, the batch is deemed weak.
Experts have cautioned that this kind of testing will only make addiction problems worse or cause deaths.
According to estimates, between 50,000 and 60,000 Americans will overdose on synthetic opioids this year, with fentanyl and other comparable chemicals accounting for the majority of these deaths.
In the past, when President Donald Trump proposed sending troops into Mexico, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the idea that the United States needed to step in to fight the cartels.
“There’s no need to catch up,” she remarked.
This occurs when Trump asks the Mexican president for help and declares his desire to label Mexican cartels as terrorist groups.
