Minnesota Man Triumphs with Massive 2,471-Pound Pumpkin at National Championship!

A huge congratulations to Travis Gienger, a dedicated horticulture teacher from Anoka, Minnesota, who has once again proven his pumpkin-growing skills at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California.

For the fourth consecutive year, Gienger emerged as a winner, showcasing a massive pumpkin that weighed in at an impressive 2,471 pounds, just narrowly edging out his closest competitor by about six pounds.

Yes, believe it or not, there’s a championship for pumpkin weighing! And this year, Gienger’s hard work paid off.

At 44, he knows a thing or two about growing these gigantic gourds. He explained that his strategy remains consistent—focusing on nutrient-rich soil and ensuring his plants receive the best possible care.

However, he noted that a particularly chilly fall combined with record-breaking rainfall had affected his pumpkin’s growth.

Despite the challenges, Gienger pushed through and managed to grow this impressive gourd.

Last year, Gienger set a new world record with a pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds, which still stands as a remarkable achievement in the pumpkin-growing world.

Reflecting on his journey this year, he said, “We faced really tough weather, but somehow, I kept pushing.

It took a lot of effort, and we just managed to pull it off at the end, even if it was close.”

The journey didn’t end at the weigh-off. Gienger and his family spent 35 hours driving their giant pumpkin from Minnesota to California, showing their dedication and love for the sport.

The next destination for this massive gourd is Southern California, where it will be part of a special Halloween event. Professional carvers will work on transforming it into an amazing 3D sculpture.

Gienger also shared some insights into his pumpkin-growing technique. “We take seeds from the largest pumpkins around the world and cross them,” he explained, highlighting the effort that goes into growing these enormous gourds.

Interestingly, the seeds from these prize-winning pumpkins can be quite valuable, selling for around $30 to $40 each, not to mention the prize money, which can reach up to $9 per pound.
