More bank closures announced around the US and in Michigan

Citizens Bank is planning to close more branches in early 2025, after closing almost two dozen in 2024.

Citizens is going to close more branches in January 2025, following the lead of Huntington National Bank, Bank of America, PNC, and other banks that did the same thing in 2024.

What Citizens Bank Branches Are Closing?

Files with the US Office of Comptroller of the Currency show that Citizens Financial Group Inc. wants to close 15 branches in six states, which are listed below.

  • Pennsylvania: Closing six branches
  • Massachusetts: Closing four branches
  • Michigan: Closing two branches
  • New Hampshire: Closing one branch
  • Ohio: Closing one branch
  • Rhode Island: Closing one branch

It’s not clear when these branches will close for good, but Providence Business News says that the Rhode Island location will close on January 22, 2025.

Citizens Bank’s website says that the bank has 67 locations in 42 cities across Michigan. The two Michigan branches that are set to close in 2025 have not yet been given a location.

The Citizens Bank location in Grosse Pointe Woods, located at 19307 Mack Avenue was closed earlier this year.

Multiple Banks Closing Locations in 2024

Earlier this year, a number of national bank chains said that they would be closing many branches across the US. On that list of banks are:

  • PNC Bank, NA
  • US Bank, NA
  • Bank of America, NA
  • First national Bank of Pennyslvania
  • Huntington National Bank
  • Capital One, NA
  • Fifth Third Bank, NA
  • JP Morgan Chase Bank, NA
  • KeyBank, NA
  • Woodforest National Bank
  • Wells Fargo Bank

About 20,000 bank branches have been closed since 2009 according to the FDIC.
