New Costco Payment to Its Customers Announced – How to Claim It

The well-known warehouse retailer Costco recently landed in some hot water and now it is the time to pay out. Costco has reached a $2 million settlement with customers over misleading advertisements of its Kirkland Signature wet wipes, not one of their staple products, but still a staple for many of the brand’s loyal shoppers. Eligible consumers, particularly those in New York who bought these wipes between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017, need to act swiftly to claim their share as the claim period is nearing its end.

This settlement arises from a lawsuit asserting that the Kirkland Signature (from the Costco owned brand) wipes were not flushable, contrary to what was marketed. According to Top Class Actions, “Consumers argue they would not have purchased the wipes if they knew they were not truly flushable as advertised.”

The lawsuit highlights that despite being advertised as flushable, the wipes caused significant damage to plumbing, septic systems, and sewer lines. Consequently, many consumers faced unexpected and costly repairs. Buyers insist they would have avoided purchasing these wipes had they known the truth about their flushability or at least not have flushed them.

While Costco’s agreement to the settlement does not imply an admission of guilt, as it is customary in these types of settlements, the company has opted to pay $2 million to settle this false advertising class action lawsuit. Eligible class members can receive $1.30 per product purchased, with a minimum guaranteed payment of $7.50 and a maximum of $55.90, covering up to 43 products.

This Costco settlement amount could be enough to get back the cost of the product, but it would definitely not help with any repairs homeowners or renters have had to do to counteract the damage to their pipes. However, this settlement, even without a full admission of guilt could help many contend with their insurance company for them to cover most of the plumbing expenses they may have incurred because of the inadequate disposal of the wipes. Even those who have not been affected just yet by the wipes in the pipes may be able to preemptively get them checked out and solve the problem before it becomes a serious issue within the household if the pipes are indeed blocked.

Deadline to claim the Costco settlement

To receive a portion of the Costco settlement, customers must submit a valid claim form by August 9, 2024. It is crucial to complete this process within the stipulated timeframe to secure the compensation. Fortunately, proof of purchase is not required, simplifying the claims process for those who do not have their receipts.

If customers wish to exclude themselves from the settlement or file objections, they must also do so by August 9, 2024, otherwise they will not be able to file other lawsuits in the future or be compensated for larger expenses should they be able to provide the courts bigger proof of damage. Remember that this is the same deadline for submitting a claim.

Those who disagree with the settlement or prefer not to participate must follow the specified procedure to opt-out by this date too. The final approval hearing for the settlement is set for August 30, 2024. During this hearing, the settlement terms will be reviewed, and its validity confirmed.
