One of the teenage girls who was found guilty last month of kicking and stomping a 64-year-old stranger to death because they were bored and made recordings and photographs with the crippled guy to commemorate his cruel demise was punished by a judge on Wednesday.

Following the death of 64-year-old Reggie Brown last year, the 13-year-old in Washington, D.C., was found guilty on November 18 of second-degree murder and given the maximum penalty for a minor.

According to local CBS affiliate WUSA, Superior Court Judge Kendra Briggs mandated that she serve a confined commitment in a Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services facility until her 21st birthday.

Associated coverage:

Brown was allegedly tracked down and beaten to death in an alley in Washington, DC, in October 2023 by five girls, ages 12 to 15. Two of the teenagers entered guilty pleas, and the oldest was sentenced to three years in jail for assault with a deadly weapon, according to WUSA.

The 13-year-old was accused of snapping selfies with Brown and was sentenced on Wednesday.

Outside the courthouse, the family of the deceased man talked to WUSA and local CW Network station WDCW, stating that they rejected the girl’s attempt to read a written apology aloud to them in court.

“Definitely not,” said Malda Brown, Brown’s older sister. She showed no regret, compassion, or understanding.

In court, the group’s eldest member acknowledged that they had attacked Brown out of boredom before kicking and making fun of him for bleeding.

You’re leaking, damn you! Prosecutors claim that Brown was shouted at by one girl.

In court, the 15-year-old said, “He’s dead,” in response to a question about what was going through their minds following the attack.

The group’s applause, which was later caught on camera, is something Brown’s family said they will always remember.

Malda Brown clarified, “I could hear them celebrating after they killed my brother.” The cruelty and seriousness of these young girls saddens me.

However, I am simply appreciative that the judge granted them the [maximum] amount of time permitted by D.C.

The outcome of the hearing was not immediately clear, although at least one other defendant was set to be sentenced on Wednesday. Later this month, we anticipate hearing the fates of two other defendants.
