A significant earthquake off the coast of Humboldt County on Thursday morning triggered a tsunami warning, prompting residents in low-lying coastal regions to evacuate to higher ground.

The earthquake occurred in the ocean west of the community of Petrolia at 10:44 p.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. A magnitude 5.8 aftershock that occurred in far northern Sonoma County a few minutes later is one of several aftershocks that have been registered.

A tsunami warning for a large portion of the coast, extending from the Bay Area northward into Oregon, was issued in response to the earthquake.

The earthquake has affected BART service, including the closing of the Transbay Tube, in addition to the directives to avoid the coast.

The government said that service had been suspended in the tunnel that connects Oakland and San Francisco just before 11 a.m. A few minutes later, BART declared that the tube was still closed and that there was a “major delay” in all directions.

A significant delay is present in every direction of the system. Due to an earthquake report, Transbay Tube service to and from San Francisco is temporarily unavailable. Please look for other ways to get around.

When the Transbay Tube would reopen was unknown. Authorities advised passengers to look for other ways to get about.

This is an update on breaking news. More information will be provided soon.
