Northern California community mourns victims of Cybertruck crash at Thanksgiving Turkey Trot event

The annual Turkey Trot event, which was essentially a memorial for the three young adults who perished in the terrible crash of a Tesla Cybertruck on Wednesday, brought the people of Piedmont, California together Thursday morning.

A trembling Jen Cavanaugh, the mayor of Piedmont, paused to pay tribute to the college students who were on vacation when their Cybertruck was involved in a terrible collision on Hampton Road and King Avenue shortly after three in the morning on Wednesday.

With a population of roughly 10,000, Piedmont is encircled by Oakland on all sides.

Cavanaugh claimed that she had been having trouble coming up with the right words to say to the Turkey Trot attendees, many of whom were crying in the cold early air, since the previous evening.

“For families who lost those who are so precious to them, there are no words to capture the depth of their sorrow,” Cavanaugh stated. We cannot put into words how much these children mean to us.

Before the race began, Cavanaugh encouraged the emotional crowd to embrace one another and asked for a moment of quiet in memory of the crash victims.

“Piedmont, thank you for showing up in community, we appreciate you,” Cavanaugh stated. “Please turn around and embrace a friend. Today, we all depend on one another.

According to authorities, the driver of a car behind the Cybertruck at the time of the collision retrieved a fourth person from the burning debris, and three persons perished in the collision. As she spoke, Cavanaugh stated that the victim was undergoing surgery due to life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the three victims were not made public by Piedmont police, but CBS News Bay Area discovered that they were all 2023 graduates of Piedmont High School. All of the victims spent Thanksgiving at home after attending college.

According to investigators, speed had a role in the collision. Investigations were still ongoing into additional factors related to the crash’s cause and the fire that followed. According to investigators, there was no indication that the Cybertruck’s lithium battery contributed to the incident or that the vehicle had any mechanical issues.
