Police said that when they arrived at Lindsey Powell’s apartment, they were greeted by a foul stench and a scene that almost brought down an officer. Powell allegedly left to New York with her exhausted mother, leaving her four children, aged 11, 6, 4, and 3, to fend for themselves in filth and despair.
Powell’s arrest report was posted online this week by the local CBS affiliate, WFSB. Webster claimed that the smell coming from the flat was burning my nose and that there were fly swarms, trash heaps, and human and cat waste present.
Associated coverage:
According to Webster, the apartment’s living conditions were appalling. The floor of the living room was filled with clothes, trash, toys, filth, and leftover meals.
Getting around the living room without treading on any trash or bodily fluids was challenging. I discovered crusty or rotten food all over the flat, as well as human and feline waste on the kitchen floor.
Powell, 40, was arrested for allegedly leaving her kids in the sour apartment for at least eight hours on her way to upstate New York. She claimed to have left them because she was depressed and overburdened, according to the investigation.
She had been making suicidal remarks about crashing her automobile off a cliff, according to a pal. Powell’s aunt told police that she had told her that day that she planned to kill herself by ingesting a bottle of pills, according to the arrest report.
Powell was found by police in Poughkeepsie, New York, four and a half to five hours away. According to the evidence and the place where she was arrested, Powell had no plans to return to take care of her kids.
It’s not clear if Powell lived in these appalling conditions before to her alleged breakdown or if her apartment deteriorated after she moved out. When police learned of her alleged nastyness, they sent a welfare check to her residence.
I knocked on the door when I got there and talked to an 11-year-old girl, Webster said.
When the child opened the door, I was instantly struck by the smell of rotten food, cat pee, and feces. She said, “No,” in response to my question about whether her parents were home. According to [the youngster], she had no idea where her mother was, when she had left, or when she would be coming back.
The kids didn’t have a working cellphone, so they couldn’t call anyone, Webster said. He saw them eating rotting food at the house, the report said. Three of the children, according to Powell, have autism. Their father’s whereabouts and involvement in the case are unknown.
Webster told me that this stench made it hard for me to stand in the bedroom for more than a few seconds. However, it was easy for the kids to get into this bedroom. I thought the kids were no longer aware of the awful smell coming from the bedroom.
Powell is being jailed on a $250,000 surety bond after being charged with four charges of endangering a child.
