Vernette Quick and Kanielle Hernandez say there are two buildings full of frustration. They are part of the tenant association at the Bracetti Plaza, a NYCHA development on the Lower East Side.
But this time, agitation has been replaced with action. Hernandez says it was just before Easter, a gas leak took out gas service to both of their buildings.
A non-profit called Vision Urbana sprang into action, partnering with a restaurant called Casa Adela on Ave C.
More than one hundred meals will be delivered to families each day, Monday through Friday. The restaurant is named after Adela Fargas, a beloved matriarch and community champion. Her family says her life was devoted to service.
Casa Adela also has a gas outage and is using electric stoves, but the staff is still serving the community in need.
“Gas service interruptions and restoration work are a matter of public safety and involve multiple partners and steps, including shutting off service, making necessary repairs, inspections, and coordinating with the service vendors, in order to safely restore service as quickly as possible.
These processes are currently underway at Bracetti Plaza,” a NYCHA spokesperson told PIX11 News.
