NYC Weather Update: Expect Snowfall from Clipper Storm This Weekend!

New York City might see its first measurable snowfall of the season this weekend, depending on how an Alberta clipper storm interacts with another National weather system over the Atlantic Ocean.

A clipper storm is a fast-moving system that travels into the U.S. from Alberta, Canada, often bringing brief snow showers. While the city has seen a few snowflakes recently, none have stuck to the ground due to warmer temperatures. This time, conditions might align for a couple of inches of snow to fall across the five boroughs on Saturday.

What’s Needed for Snow

Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, explains that for snow to happen, certain factors must come together—particularly cold temperatures.

  • Temperatures This Weekend:
    • Friday’s low: 29°F
    • Saturday’s high: 34°F
    • Saturday’s low: 19°F

The cold air will be in place, but the snowfall depends on how the clipper storm behaves. On its own, the clipper may produce a brief snow shower or flurries but nothing significant.

“It wouldn’t be a big storm, and it may not happen at all,” Dombek said.

The Wild Card: Atlantic Storm

The outcome could change if the clipper storm interacts with a developing low-pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Two Scenarios:
    1. If the ocean storm stays far from the coast, NYC won’t see much snow.
    2. If it moves closer to shore, the clipper and the ocean storm could combine, bringing steady snowfall to the city on Friday night.

Dombek estimates that this interaction could lead to anywhere from a light coating to 2 inches of snow. While this isn’t the most likely scenario, it’s still possible for residents to wake up to a snowy landscape on Saturday.

Rain First on Wednesday

Before the clipper arrives, NYC will experience rain from another system on Wednesday.

  • Forecast:
    • Downstate NYC: Up to half an inch of rain.
    • North of the Catskills: A few inches of snow.

The rain will start late Wednesday and continue into the night.
