Obama gets back into the spotlight after voters ignored his warnings about Trump

Later this week, the former president will also be the main speaker at the 2024 Obama Democracy Forum in Chicago, where he will be joined by country music artist Reyna Roberts and actor Ryan Reynolds to talk about pluralism—the process by which various communities discover ways to cooperate.

Less than a month after the presidential election, Obama’s public appearances left Democrats wondering why the party seems to be alienated from working-class supporters. Whether Obama’s influence is still important has also been called into doubt by the election results.

According to Democratic strategist Brad Bannon, Obama feels more at ease making public appearances to criticize Trump’s proposals.

“I think this conversation with Merkel is about his concerns about Trump’s foreign policy direction and his belief that Trump will weaken our national and international posture,” the strategist said, adding that he wants to avoid getting caught up in the party debate.

While traveling the nation in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential candidacy, Obama was active and at one point reprimanded black men for failing to support the first black female president. Bannon anticipates that Obama would attempt to exercise his influence in the background and be less visible in internal Democratic Party affairs.

I think he deliberately stays away from party politics. “I don’t expect him to do much Democratic Party politics, but I think he has stepped up for Harris in the last month,” he said. He would rather blend in and use his influence in a subtle way.

I believe many Democrats value his advise and counsel, therefore it would surprise me if he didn’t have some influence behind the scenes on the incoming Democratic National Party chair. However, he will do that in an indirect manner.
