This is the home stretch of the oldest horse racing track in New Jersey.

The final events at Freehold Raceway on Park Avenue will take place on Saturday. Eleven races are planned for the day, with the first one starting at 12:30 p.m., according to the website.

At last, the historic track will be shut down entirely after more than 200 years. Its grounds have been used for horse racing since the 1830s.

After that, Monmouth Park Racetrack, Meadowlands Racetrack, Favorites at Woodbridge, Favorites at Hillsborough, and Winners Bayonne are the locations where winning tickets and vouchers can be used in person.

End of an era

Freehold Raceway’s closing was announced by track general manager Howard Bruno in the middle of September. Its operators, he said, were unable to see a way forward.

Bruno informed the audience that this was a very tough choice, particularly considering Freehold Raceway’s historical significance to the neighborhood and the New Jersey horse racing scene.

Borough Mayor Kevin Kane said in October that they will attempt to cooperate with FR Park Racing, the track’s owners, in order to keep it open.

However, they were unable to overcome the obstacles. According to the Freehold Patch, Kane, a Democrat, said that borough officials tried to meet with the racetrack’s owners but were turned down.

State records show that on December 12, the track laid off ninety-three employees.

What s next for the Freehold Raceway?

Plans for the racetrack’s grounds have not been disclosed by the owners.

Kane informed the Patch that in order to decide what the racetrack’s future holds, the borough would do a redevelopment study on the facility.

Local authorities are hoping that a buyer would show up with a plan for the property.
