Investigators believe the deadly conclusion of an internet obsession led to the stabbing deaths of three people during a brawl at a Monterey County residence on Sunday night.

When county sheriff deputies arrived at the residence in the 300 block of Bollenbacher Drive in the Bolsa Knolls neighborhood northeast of Salinas just before ten o’clock at night, they discovered three individuals with stab wounds.

According to sheriff’s authorities, detectives believe that Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef, 25, and a lady who resides in the house were acquainted through their activities on a gaming platform, and that Vandorhoef became obsessed with her for years.

He was so enamored that, according to sheriff’s officials, he and suspected accomplice Darius Avery Whyte, 25, flew down from their Canadian residences to arrive at the victim’s door. Vandorhoef then allegedly forced his way inside by pretending to be a delivery driver carrying a parcel.

“The suspect started stabbing the victim’s boyfriend as soon as he opened the door,” Cmdr. Andres Rosas of the Monterey Sheriff’s Department stated.

In an effort to protect her lover, the lady armed herself with a metal instrument and assaulted Vandorhoef with it. According to Rosas, Vandorhoef then attacked the woman, allegedly strangling and stabbing her.

The boyfriend and Vandorhoef are still in severe condition at the hospital, but they should live. It was determined that the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Detectives discovered handcuffs, duct tape, and knives in the package that Vandorhoef was carrying during the first phase of the inquiry, according to Rosas.

Additionally, deputies spoke with Whyte, who was discovered in the neighborhood but was given permission to depart after he denied any involvement in the suspected offenses.

However, sheriff’s authorities say he was caught Monday morning when attempting to return to Canada while sitting on a plane at San Jose Mineta International Airport.

“They both knew what the plan was and they both knew what was going on,” Rosas stated.

Vandorhoef is being held on more than $4.1 million bail after being arrested on accusations of attempted murder, conspiracy, mayhem, stalking, and burglary.

Whyte is being jailed on $1 million bail after being arrested on accusations of conspiracy and attempted murder.
