The first traffic fatality of the year occurred in East San Jose late Monday night when a pedestrian was hit by a car.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Berryessa and Sierra roads just after 10:30 p.m. after receiving a complaint of a car crash that involved a pedestrian, according to San Jose police.

The pedestrian, who was crossing southbound on Berryessa just beyond the crosswalk, was struck by the driver of a 2001 silver Toyota SUV traveling east on Berryessa Road at a green signal, according to the preliminary investigation.

After being transported to a nearby hospital with potentially fatal injuries, the pedestrian was declared dead. His identity is still unknown.

The motorist stayed at the site and cooperated with the inquiry, according to the police.

The tragedy on Monday comes after a devastating 2024 traffic accident in San Jose that left at least 48 people dead. Nineteen of the 48 fatalities that occurred last year were pedestrians.

The city has a long way to go before reaching the objective of “Vision Zero,” which aims to eradicate traffic fatalities, according to a report given by city officials last year. From 29 in 2010 and 2012 to a record high of 65 in 2023, traffic fatalities have more than doubled since the beginning of the decade.

Detective O’Brien of the department’s Traffic Investigations Unit can be reached by email at [email protected] if you have any more information about the incident.
