Dr. Harry Edwards is most remembered for organizing the 1968 Olympic protest, but that was just the start of a long and valiant career in the sociology of sport, a discipline he founded.

“America’s greatest issue right now is our mutual fear of one another. “Our fear of change is the biggest issue we have,” Edwards said.

In a recent interview with CBS News Bay Area, renowned sociologist and civil rights activist Dr. Edwards stated that America has reached a turning point.

“There will be some very, very, very gloomy days ahead to the extent that we fail to meet that task. Because I don’t think that the greatest and brightest minds in American society are in charge of making important decisions at all levels. It’s possible that things will eventually become overly tense and strained,” Edwards stated. “It is absurd to think that we can return to something. America cannot be great again by going back in time. Even if we could pinpoint a moment in time when America was wonderful, we would still be unable to go back. when there was a lynching epidemic in the 1920s?”

As an 82-year-old sociology professor and student-athlete at San Jose State in the 1960s, Edwards continues to speak out on issues of politics, society, sports, and race and equality.

He founded the Olympic Project for Human Rights while pursuing his Ph.D. at Cornell, which resulted in fellow Spartans John Carlos and Tommie Smith raising their gloved fists on the medal stand at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

A life-size statue on the SJSU campus today commemorates the incident, which was first heavily condemned.

“San Jose State was perfect in terms of size, in terms of culture, in terms of contact with broader national and even international prominence,” he stated. However, at the same time, it wasn’t oppressive due to its rigid structure and strict control. Thus, it established a setting in which it was feasible to have lofty aspirations for change and to start putting them into practice. Additionally, there were elite athletes present who could raise awareness of these kinds of problems.

Edwards, a Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, is concerned about the effects of artificial intelligence and a chaotic social media landscape today.

“We have a glut of information where the first issue is to decide what is fake and what is real,” he stated. “What is substantive and what is simply concocted?”

He also understands why there aren’t more athletes who are willing to speak out on social concerns.

“Colin Kaepernick made a declaration. Edwards said that it was made very evident that there is a significant cost.

However, he asserts that new leaders and social movements will constantly arise in American society.

The fact that women will play a bigger part in that next endeavor is one of the things that has become very evident. Edwards stated, “I’m not worried that we don’t see the leadership for that.” “Dr. King, a 26-year-old pastor from Birmingham, Alabama, was unexpected. However, I am quite confident that she is on her way because I believe that’s where our culture is at this point.

The 49ers recently recognized Edwards as their 2024 Inspire Change Changemaker, an annual award presented to those who have a positive impact on their community.

Initially employed as a team consultant by Coach Bill Walsh, he has been actively involved in scouting black candidates for front-office roles in major league sports.

However, his progress has halted recently due to health issues. He has been diagnosed with bone cancer, which is terminal.

His words, “I choose to manage it this way,” Through whatever it takes to get to where this stage of my life is taking me, I’m going to continue doing what I’m doing with the same mindset, disposition, and so on. And that’s okay with me.”
