Early Friday morning saw the return of moderate rainfall to Northern California as a new storm system moved ashore ahead of more hazardous surf conditions.

Around 1:40 a.m., the first band of precipitation swept into the North Bay, grew in coverage as it proceeded south, and continued throughout the morning commute. Throughout the day, the rain was predicted to progressively move further to the south and east until tapering off on Friday night.

As the leading edge moves into the South Bay, the main band of rain is expected to depart the North Bay shortly, according to the radar update at 9:30 AM.OLybV7625u #CAwxpic.twitter.com

On the coast and around the bay, daytime highs will typically be in the high 50s to low 60s, while inland, they will be in the mid to high 50s. The majority of overnight lows will be in the 40s.

Through Friday night, a beach hazards statement will be in force in San Francisco, the coastal North Bay, which includes Point Reyes National Seashore, the San Francisco Peninsula, Southern Monterey Bay, and the Big Sur Coast. Beachgoers are cautioned about localized beach erosion and hazardous swimming and surfing conditions.

“People can be pulled into the water from rocks, jetties, and beaches by swifter waves that can suddenly wash across the beach. Even the most seasoned swimmers might suffer from cold water shock if they are suddenly submerged in cold water. The risk of drowning in choppy open waters is significantly increased by cold water shock, which can cause abrupt changes in respiration, heart rate, and blood pressure, according to the NWS.
