After being recalled in the November election, Pamela Price’s term as the district attorney for Alameda County came to an end on Thursday. Supervisors intend to talk about the procedure for choosing Price’s replacement in the interim.
Royl L. Roberts, Chief Assistant District Attorney, took over as the head of the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office at 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024. In a brief statement released Friday, the DA’s office stated that he will remain in the role until further notice.
The DA’s office added that Roberts had meetings on Friday.
Alameda County voters backed recalling Price by a margin of 62.92% to 37.08%, according to the certified election results.
At a news conference on November 18, Price said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you as your district attorney and I commend you for casting your ballot in 2022 and believing in the potential to reform the criminal justice system after 100 years here in Alameda County.”
The board of supervisors for Alameda County also said on Friday that they will discuss the appointment procedure for a new district attorney the following week. On Tuesday at 11 a.m., the board will hold its normal meeting to consider the issue.
About ten applicants have shown interest in the position, according to Nate Miley, president of the Board of Supervisors, who spoke to CBS News Bay Area last month. As part of the selection process, the supervisors will receive applications and conduct interviews with the candidates.
“We are seeking a someone capable of overseeing and managing the district attorney’s office. It has a budget of more over $100 million,” Miley stated.
Butch Ford, a Price critic who spent 23 years in the Alameda County DA’s office and is currently an associate district attorney in San Francisco, is one of the candidates who has apparently shown interest.
Venus Johnson, California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s senior advisor and principal deputy, and L.D. Louis, a former Alameda County prosecutor, are also possible contenders.
According to Miley, a new district attorney will probably be chosen by supervisors in February. The appointment will last until the election in 2026.
