Reindeer return to the Rockingham rooftop

Once again, Santa and his reindeer are perched atop Discovery Place Kids.

The famous display, which collapsed following a storm eight days prior to Christmas last year, was set up by city workers in the late morning and early afternoon.

In order to get the exhibit ready for this year, Randy Warren and Arts Richmond volunteers recently finished a restoration project.

While municipal workers hoisted the sleigh onto the roof, Susan Perkins and Mari Bennett applied a final coat of paint on Santa’s red exterior.

Perkins, Bennett, and city employees carried each reindeer to its destination, down the street and along the sidewalk.

Last week, the city started preparing for the holidays.

At 7 p.m., Rockingham will have its 22nd annual Christmas tree lighting. Bob Sargent, the producer of the upcoming NASCAR weekend at Rockingham Speedway, flips the switch on Tuesday, December 3.

The nearly 30-year-old local custom known as “Christmas on the Square” will take place on Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
