Federal prosecutors have linked Chicago rapper Lil Durk to the 2022 homicide of Stephon Mack in the Roseland neighborhood, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. The latest details emerged last month when Lil Durk pleaded not guilty to federal murder-for-hire charges, allegedly involving the attempted revenge killing of rapper Quando Rondo.

The Chicago Tribune report revealed these developments in a warrant application that was filed in April 2023 but was not made public until last Wednesday.

Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was initially charged with a murder-for-hire conspiracy in a criminal complaint filed on October 24 — the same day an indictment was unsealed charging five other individuals in connection to the 2022 attack that resulted in the death of Tyquian Bowman, also known as Quando Rondo’s cousin, in Los Angeles.

Additionally, Banks was charged with further conspiracy and gun-related offenses in a superseding indictment filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.

According to the Chicago Tribune report, unsealed documents allege that Banks was involved in the January 2022 killing of 24-year-old Stephon Mack. Mack was fatally shot when leaving a youth center in Roseland. The report connects this killing to the 2021 slaying of Dontay Banks, Lil Durk’s brother, who was fatally shot outside a Harvey nightclub.

Federal prosecutors accuse Anthony Montgomery-Wilson, 24, and Preston Powell, 23, both of Chicago, of conspiring with others to carry out the fatal shooting of Mack in exchange for money.

Mack was shot multiple times, including in his head and chest, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 40-year-old security guard for the youth center was also injured in the attack but survived.

This latest development further complicates Lil Durk’s legal troubles, as he now faces serious allegations tying him to multiple violent incidents in Chicago. The connection to Mack’s murder highlights ongoing concerns about the impact of gang-related violence in the city and the influence of Chicago rappers in criminal activities.

As the legal proceedings continue, this case will be closely watched not only for its implications on Lil Durk’s career but also as a reflection of broader issues concerning violence and justice in urban communities.

The outcome of this case could have significant ramifications for the music industry and the criminal justice system, particularly regarding how crimes associated with high-profile individuals are prosecuted.
