Authorities say they have video footage of suspected Mexican cartel members shooting at US Border Patrol officials near the southern border Monday, as a group of migrants allegedly tried to enter the US illegally.
The spectacular attack happened near Fronton, Texas, at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to Customs and Border Protection.
The Post was informed by Border Patrol sources that when the group of migrants tried to cross the Rio Grande, the alleged cartel members opened fire.
A single shot was fired back toward the Mexican side by a Border Patrol agent, according to sources.
Lt. Chris Olivarez posted on X, along with other videos of the highly armed shooter, that DPS was called in to support the US Border duty after agents were shot by Mexican cartel members while on duty in Fronton.
According to DPS drone operators, the gunmen were apprehended when they fled Mexico because of the military presence and sought safety on an island that lies between the United States and Mexico.
As the drone followed them, the video showed at least four armed men strolling along the riverbank and attempting to conceal themselves in the bushes.
Several individuals can be seen in the films pointing their weapons straight toward the drone on multiple occasions.
According to Olivarez, the State of Texas will keep a close eye on the region and employ all of its resources to stop transnational threats to our law enforcement partners and the country.
CBP said late Monday that the Texas Department of Public Safety, DHS Office of Inspector General, FBI, and Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility were all still investigating the gunshot site.
Authorities said there were no reported injuries.
According to accounts, the migrants who tried to enter the United States throughout the tragedy failed to do so.
The shooting happened as President Trump fortified the southern border and clamped down on illegal immigration to start his second term.
In addition to the roughly 2,200 US National Guard and Reserve members currently stationed at the Mexican border, US authorities said last week that up to 1,500 active duty troops will be sent there.
Last week, the Washington Post revealed that Trump was thinking of deploying as many as 10,000 troops to the border as part of the nation’s border-sealing efforts.
Following 956 arrests and 554 detainers the previous day, Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported that it made 1,179 arrests and issued 853 immigration detainers on Monday.
