Republicans are eager to attack government programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, some of their favorite targets, after Donald Trump’s victory.
Representative Richard McCormick bemoaned the fact that seventy-five percent of the budget is nondiscretionary in an appearance with Fox Business on Tuesday morning. He also discussed Republican solutions to the problem.
There will be some tough choices for us to make. McCormick stated, “We need to bring in the Democrats and talk about Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.” We are able to save hundreds of billions of dollars, and we know how. To take on those problems, we simply need to have the stomach.
The remarks made by McCormick are not shocking. Trump suggested decreasing Social Security and Medicare during the 2024 presidential campaign, saying in March that there is more that can be done to reduce entitlements, as well as to combat theft and poor entitlement management.
Similar to this, earlier this year, House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested reducing Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in order to boost military spending. Additionally, there are major cuts to well-liked programs in the notorious conservative manifesto Project 2025, which Trump and the GOP tried to disassociate themselves from until Trump’s election victory.
Given Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House, where a single vote may derail their legislative agenda, McCormick’s pledge to speak with Democrats about such adjustments is unlikely to garner much support from the opposite party.
Major groups like the AARP will oppose any measures to cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, even if the GOP can win over a few Democrats. Officials from both parties should refrain from upsetting the older voters who are the foundation of the Republican Party and who depend on the programs.
