Protests are rising throughout the US, especially in San Francisco, as Donald Trump prepares for his second term in office. To express their disapproval of the president-elect and their worries about his policies and how they might affect different communities, protesters gathered outside San Francisco City Hall.
Marching through Downtown San Francisco, hundreds of anti-Trump demonstrators and pro-Palestinian supporters pledged to maintain their opposition to Trump’s policies. The protesters made it apparent that they don’t think the president embodies their principles.
Hayward resident Monica Uribe voiced her worries about possible mass deportations and risks to women’s rights under Trump’s administration.
“I think a woman ought to be able to make her own decisions. As part of the demonstration, Uribe carried two of her own paintings and declared, “No man should ever tell us what to do with our bodies.”
Trump is seen in jail in one of the artworks. Uribe went so far as to refer to Trump as a criminal, adding that she feels he is unqualified to hold public office.
“He should be locked up. “He’s a criminal,” Uribe declared.
Like Uribe, many protesters claim that Trump’s policies hurt the poor while unfairly benefitting the wealthy.
The Trump administration’s billionaire-driven agenda, especially its effects on workers’ rights and immigrant rights, was attacked by Luna Osleger-Montaez, a rally organizer with the Answer Coalition.
“This is the start of a mass movement that can really fight back against the extreme right billionaire agenda of this country,” she stated.
Despite being smaller than some of the anti-Trump protests that broke out in late 2016 and early 2017, organizers stressed that the determination of people participating is more significant than the protest’s number.
“We want to put real pressure on the billionaire class of this country and organize ourselves such that we have more power in this country,” stated Osleger-Monta ez.
Jeff Burns, the chair of the Contra Costa County Republican Party, is getting ready to travel to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration, where a cold front is predicted to have an impact on the event. Due to the frigid temperatures, Burns and a large number of Trump supporters will watch the inauguration from an arena instead of the Capitol steps as was initially scheduled.
This year, we kind of got the short stick. That’s how mother nature works. However, we’ll handle it,” Burns added.
Burns said he was excited for another four years of a Trump presidency despite the weather difficulties.
Burns went on to say that he disagrees with the demonstrators’ assertions about women’s rights.
“They have every right to go out and exercise their First Amendment rights and free speech,” Burns stated. “I certainly don’t think women’s rights are under assault.”
Uribe and others are determined to oppose Trump’s agenda as demonstrations continue around the country.
“I’m not going to give up, and I hope this country doesn’t give up,” she stated.
