In order to confront the biggest budget deficit in the city’s history, new San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie wasted no time going to work on his first full day on the job Thursday. He ordered a citywide hiring freeze and other cost-cutting measures.

During his first meeting with department heads on Thursday morning, Lurie made the announcement. He also gave departments instructions to “realign spending and programming with the city’s priorities with a focus on evidence and proven results.” Among these steps will be the suspension of recently announced contracts and new initiatives.

Following Lurie’s inauguration in a public ceremony on Wednesday in Civic Center Plaza, Chinatown festivities continued into the evening. The $800 million financial imbalance in the city was the main topic of the incoming mayor’s inaugural speech.

He stated that reducing the deficit will necessitate “some painful decisions” and that San Francisco “can no longer hide from our fiscal reality.”

“We need to stop spending more than we can afford,” he stated. “We need to prioritize essential services and make the investments that are critical to getting San Francisco up and running again.”

The directive to department heads “exempts positions which are historically challenging to staff and that directly support public safety and health,” according to a release from the mayor’s office regarding the cost-cutting measures.

“San Francisco is making a comeback, and I intend to put us in the best possible position to drive that growth,” the press announcement cited Lurie as saying. “The days of band-aid fixes are passed, as our city is currently dealing with a significant fiscal deficit. We are dedicated to maintaining fiscal restraint, providing San Franciscans with the accountability they need, and concentrating government efforts on the most important tasks.”
