Jeffrey Tumlin, director of transportation for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, has said that he will step down as the agency’s leader by the end of 2024.

Since December 2019, Tumlin has served as the SFMTA’s leader, and his five-year term was about to end.

“Serving in this position has been the greatest honor of my life, and I’m extremely proud of what the SFMTA has accomplished during my tenure,” he stated in a press release. “There is still far more to be done but I have full faith that our talented and highly motivated staff and leadership, working alongside city and state partners, will shepherd the agency into a successful new chapter.”

Beginning January 1, 2025, Julie Kirschbaum, the director of transit for the SFMTA, will take over as acting director of transportation. Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie, who takes office on January 8, will have the chance to name a new permanent head of the agency after Mayor London Breed, who appointed Tumlin to the post back in 2019, lost the mayoral race last month.

In a statement released on Friday, Breed praised Tumlin as “a leader in building infrastructure, improving Muni operations, and making the hard decisions necessary for our city as we grow.”

With bus and light-rail vehicle fares, parking fines, and other revenue sources all declining, SFMTA’s most recent fiscal year revenues were 16% lower than they were prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. The agency projects that SFMTA’s budget shortfall will be at least $239 million and possibly as much as $322 million in fiscal year 2026–2027, when federal, state, and regional relief funding expire.

Tumlin’s service to the community was acknowledged by San Francisco State Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat.

“Over the course of my 27 years as a daily Muni rider, Muni has improved more than it has in that time under Jeff’s direction. Jeff’s dedication to making Muni function has resulted in speedier and more dependable service, and Muni rider satisfaction ratings are at all-time highs.
