In the SoMa area of San Francisco, a new youth supportive housing complex is about to open.
On Wednesday, the city’s Finance and Budget Committee suggested that the new property’s lease be approved.
Forty-two units for young adults aged 18 to 24 will be housed in the building along Folsom Street.
“I am asking everyone involved in this process to join me in giving the warmest possible welcome to our new neighbors,” stated Sheriff Matt Dorsey.
Neighbors who were concerned that the building may exacerbate drug and crime problems raised some concerns about the proposal, while many who supported the youth housing—particularly for LGBTQ adolescents—made their views heard.
During public comment, one participant stated, “It makes sense that we would have a housing project for young LGBTQ adults there, as the neighborhood has a vibrant LGBT community.”
“I have had experiences with friends, lovers, peers that have gone through hardships that I think really could have been solved by having a place to stay,” stated another.
During public discussion, dozens of people spoke, and all of them supported the new proposal.
According to Honey Mahogany, the project will only gain more significance since she believes that more LGBTQ youngsters may relocate to the city in the years to come.
“People are feeling more and more emboldened to be homophobic, to be transphobic and more and more kids are getting kicked out of their homes and ending up on the streets, and they’re coming to places like San Francisco because San Francisco historically has been a welcoming place for so many communities but especially the LGBTQ community,” Mahogany said.
Security and round-the-clock assistance will be provided by the new supportive living facility.
The Board of Supervisors will now have to approve the project.
