The troubled sheriff of San Mateo County has filed lawsuits against county officials, demanding her resignation, in an attempt to recover $10 million.

Attorneys representing Sheriff Christina Corpus filed the lawsuit on Friday, accusing the county of wrongdoing.

The conflict started as a quarrel between the officers’ union and the sheriff’s office. In November, an independent report that accused Corpus of workplace misconduct—including alleged misuse of authority, use of racial and homophobic slurs, and an inappropriate connection with a staff member—brought the fight into the public eye.

On the same day the report was made public, the sheriff’s office arrested Deputy Carlos Tapia, the president of the San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, on charges of grand theft and acquiring funds under false pretenses.

According to the San Mateo County District Attorney, who absolved Tapiawas of all charges last month, “there was no basis to believe any violation of law had occurred, and finally that Deputy Tapia should not have been arrested.”

According to the sheriff’s lawsuit, the study was prejudiced and a part of a “evil scheme” to remove her from office. Additionally, it claims that Corpus has been singled out due to her status as the first Latina sheriff in the county.

The complaint states that, in part, “This is a case about a county discriminating against, harassing and defaming a dedicated public servant because the defendants do not want either a woman or a Latinx person as the head of their sheriff’s department.”

The county has been contacted by CBS News Bay Area for a response, but they have not yet responded. The county will have a special election in March to determine whether to remove the sheriff.
