Authorities said a resident of San Mateo was arrested by police on Wednesday on suspicion of stabbing someone else during a fight.
Soon after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, an officer responding to a community member’s parking complaint at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and South Amphlett Boulevard overheard a heated argument and noticed two men standing on the sidewalk, according to a statement released by the San Mateo Police Department on Thursday morning.
After parking his patrol cruiser, the officer went to look into the noise. One of the individuals swiftly stabbed the victim with a knife as the verbal altercation became out of hand. The suspect was told to drop the knife by the officer, who also asked for backup. The suspect was apprehended safely and placed in handcuffs; he was eventually identified as Cristian Gomez, a 26-year-old resident of San Mateo.
The victim received medical attention and was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Before arresting Gomez for assault with a deadly weapon, investigating officers spoke with witnesses, gathered evidence, and looked over security camera footage. The San Mateo County Jail received Gomez’s booking.
It is requested that anyone with surveillance footage or information about the event call the San Mateo Police Department at (650) 522-7700.
