Three other inmates are suspected of being involved in the attack that left an inmate at a South Bay detention facility critically ill, deputies reported Wednesday.
The incident occurred Monday in one of the barracks of the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Shortly after noon, a deputy performing a standard welfare check discovered the man severely injured and unresponsive, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputy requested more staff and medical support. Until EMS professionals arrived around ten minutes later, life-saving efforts were administered to the man.
After being transported to a nearby hospital, the man had surgery to treat his severe brain injuries. The man is still on life support and in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to a preliminary inquiry, the attack took place in a “large, open, dormitory-style living space” with multiple rows of metal bunk beds, as described by the deputies.
Three prisoners accused in the attack were identified by deputies. The Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose received the suspects. The suspects have been charged with torture and attempted murder.
The names of the accused have not been made public by authorities.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
