As the severe cold and lake-effect snow reach Western New York, school closures are beginning to materialize.

According to Buffalo Public Schools, there will be no remote instruction on Tuesday, January 21 due to school closures. All employees and students are asked to remain at home and be careful.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency for counties affected by the lake effect storm, so the district, which had previously claimed that it had used its allotted snow days, said it would request reimbursement from the New York State Education Department for any snow days used during the emergency order.

The district also said that because of the emergency order, the High School Regents examinations that were supposed to take place on Tuesday will be rescheduled.

The following districts have already declared their closures for Tuesday, January 21:

  • Lackawanna City School District
  • Pioneer Central Schools
  • Iroquois Central School
  • Orchard Park Central School District
  • Olean City School District
  • Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District
  • Eden Central Schools
  • Frontier Central Schools
  • Gowanda Central School District

The Tuesday Gowanda Regents examinations have been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
