The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Tuesday night thanks to a goal from Jalen Chatfield with 2:39 remaining.

Chatfield dropped the puck and pushed a shot toward the net that slipped past Vitek Vanecek’s right arm after catching a high clearing attempt at the top of the right circle. Chatfield scored his third goal of the year.

Both of San Jose’s goals were scored by Luke Kunin. In the Sharks’ first game since they traded goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to Colorado on Monday, Vanecek recorded 25 saves.

Carolina also had goals from Brent Burns and Shayne Gostisbehere. 21 shots were stopped by Pyotr Kochetkov.

Four minutes into the first period, Gostisbehere gave Carolina a 1-0 lead. However, his blunder in the second period allowed Kunin to score his second goal, giving San Jose a 2-1 advantage.

Takeaways

Sharks: Macklin Celebrini keeps up his impressive rookie season start. Kunin’s first goal was assisted by the NHL draft’s first overall pick. In his first 19 NHL games, he has 16 points.

Hurricanes: Carolina, which has lost four of its last five games, is coming out of a mini-slump and could hardly afford to lose at home to one of the weakest teams in the Western Conference. The Canes persisted in their efforts to win at home despite Vanecek’s breakaway save on Jordan Martinook in the second period and his point-blank save on Sebastian Aho in the third.

Key moment

Burns’ goal at 4:11 of the third was beautiful, but not all goals are. Aho passed the puck back across the ice to Burns for a tap-in goal after Martin Necas initiated the play with a cross-ice pass.

Key stat

Burns played for the Sharks for 11 seasons. In 30 games against San Jose in his career, the 39-year-old defenceman has scored 18 points.

Up next

On Thursday, the Sharks visit St. Louis to wrap out a six-game trip. On Friday, the Hurricanes take on Ottawa to continue their four-game homestand.
