A New York City eye doctor is recovering after being unexpectedly attacked during an exam at his clinic on the Upper East Side.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon, shocking both the doctor and his staff.

Dr. Ronald Goldstein, a well-known optometrist who has worked in the neighborhood for 37 years, was treating a patient when a man entered the room and punched him in the head without any warning.

Security footage from the clinic shows the attacker hitting Dr. Goldstein and then quickly leaving.

“I didn’t even see him coming. He hit me in the side of the head, and I blacked out,” said Dr. Goldstein. The force of the punch caused him to fall to the ground, and his patient rushed out to get help.

The staff quickly responded, and Dr. Goldstein was taken to the hospital, where he received a CT scan and seven stitches.

The attacker, who left the clinic in less than 30 seconds, did not speak or acknowledge anyone during the assault.

The surveillance video has been turned over to the police, who are now looking for the suspect.

A staff member managed to snap a picture of the man as he left, which will help authorities in their search.

“I’ve been in this neighborhood for nearly four decades and have never had to lock my doors, but now I feel like I don’t have a choice,” Dr. Goldstein said.

“I can’t imagine why anyone would do this, especially at an eye clinic where most people leave happy.”

The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
