A 74-year-old man in Colorado recently had a terrifying encounter when a black bear and its three cubs broke into his home.

The incident happened in Lake City when the bear family crashed through a partially shattered sliding glass door, entering the house.

Residents in the home heard a loud noise around 8:30 p.m. and saw the bears making their way inside.

The injured man tried to scare the bear away by grabbing a chair, hoping to push it out the door.

Thankfully, the situation didn’t turn deadly, though it came very close, according to state Parks and Wildlife Officer Lucas Martin.

When law enforcement and emergency services arrived at the scene, the three cubs were still inside the house.

The residents had taken shelter in a bedroom to stay safe. With the help of a county deputy, the cubs eventually exited the house.

However, the authorities later confirmed that the sow (mother bear) and her cubs were involved in the incident and, due to the danger they posed, were euthanized.

Brandon Diamond, Parks and Wildlife Area Wildlife Manager, expressed the unfortunate reality of such cases.

He noted that these bears were already very comfortable around humans, which is a clear sign that they had many interactions with people before. “When a bear gets this used to being around humans, it means they’ve been in contact with people quite a bit,” Diamond said.

Lake City lies about 255 miles southwest of Denver. Last year, Colorado recorded six bear attacks, showing that human-bear encounters remain a significant issue in the state.

Wildlife officials continue to urge residents to stay vigilant and take precautions to prevent attracting bears to their homes.

Simple steps like securing trash, closing windows, and removing any food sources outside can go a long way in avoiding similar incidents in the future.
